Understanding Import Duties and Customs Clearance

June 21, 2026

Customs clearance is one of the most intimidating parts of importing — but it does not have to be. Here is what every importer must understand.

HS Codes

Every product has a Harmonized System (HS) code that determines its duty rate. Misclassifying your goods is a common and costly mistake.

Incoterms

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) means the supplier covers all costs. DAP (Delivered at Place) means you pay duties on arrival. Know your terms before you sign.

Working with a Customs Broker

A licensed customs broker handles all documentation on your behalf and ensures compliance with local import regulations.
